Star Contributor of the Month – Mohit Kumar Bajoria

screen-shot-2017-02-24-at-10-52-45-pmWe’re recognizing Mohit Kumar Bajoria of Jammu, India. Mohit has been a member of our community since he joined us a GSOC intern in March of 2016 and worked on adding browser-based offline access to the Community App underneath the mentorship of Gaurav. Since then he’s continued to excel and be an active part of the community first by acting as a GCI mentor and now by taking the initiative to fix the remaining bugs in the re-skin so it can be shipped to the community. These past couple of weeks, Mohit has really demonstrated his leadership by stepping up to become maintainer of the re-skin branch all on his own doing – he’s been mentoring other contributors, squashing lots of bugs, and reviewing and merging incoming pull requests. This call to leadership has been opportune as we seek empowered individuals from the community to stabilize and maintain Generation 2 as we transition to Generation 3.

Mohit Kumar Bajoria – Jammu, India

Brief Bio (in the words of Mohit):

I am an open source enthusiast working on web and mobile applications. I love to make progressive web applications which can also work offline. I mainly work on Javascript and its different frameworks.

AngularJS is my favorite framework till now. I have contributed in the community app which is also built on angularJS. Next, I am looking to contribute to the self service web app for Mifos and re-skinning the current community app.

I am a 3rd Year computer science undergraduate student from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Jammu. I was also a Google Summer of Code 2016 student for the Mifos Initiative and also got the chance to Mentor Google Code-Inn 2016.

During my GSOC Internship, I was mentored by Gaurav Saini, who helped me in building my skills and solving real problems. He taught me how to ask questions on Forums and how to look for solutions when you get stuck during development. Before GSOC, I had no idea of building progressive web applications, but those 3-4 months i learned about the PWA apps and transformed the community app into PWA, gaining tons of experience.

I would also like to thank community lead, Ed Cable, who is such a inspiration for me. Ed is always responsive to emails and hangout chat. He makes sure that we don’t get blocked during the development which I like the most about him.

Relevant Skills & Experience:  Javascript, AngularJs, Ionic 2, NodeJs, Git and Basic Python.

Mohit’s Impact:

Discovering Mifos

I discovered Mifos from my senior Rishabh Shukla who was also a GSOC intern for the year, 2014.  As Google announced the organization list, the first organization I saw was Mifos, because I just matched my skill set and I love how the community is so responsive to each and every individual.

I applied for two projects during GSOC – First one would be AngularJS community app enhancements and second would be Browser Based Offline Access. I got the second one.

Contributions Made to Date:

So far, I have made contributions on the community app built on AngularJS by transforming the community app into a progressive web application and making it also work offline for the user.

Current Projects: Currently I am working on re-skinning the community app as soon as possible and making it responsive for every device. I look forward to work on the self service web app after the current project.

Impact on the Poor: Everyone should have access to banking and poor people should have equal access to banking opportunities.

What’s Rewarding about Working on Mifos:

It is a great experience working at Mifos. I have learned from my mentor Gaurav who has always been so responsive. We are still in touch daily discussing about various projects and issues related to the community app.

Mifos always appreciates your contribution which motivates me to work for the community. I am very much thankful to Ed who has managed to make such an awesome community.

Top Piece of Advice for Others in the Mifos Community: Ask Questions. Be curious to know what’s going on in the community. Mifos has a dedicated gitter channel and mailing lists where you won’t be left with no reply; you will surely get answers to your questions. So feel free to discuss and ask questions.
